PFC Research and Publications

Welcome to PFC Research

PFC’s 2025-2028 Strategic Plan outlines the Research Agenda focus as the People and Practices in Canadian Philanthropic Foundations. We provide in-depth organizational analysis of philanthropic foundations in Canada, exploring their operational practices and the human elements shaping their impact. Our research aims to redefine understandings of philanthropy, enhance sector transparency, and monitor progress over time.

Each year, PFC publishes a focused report:

  • 2024: Landscape of Canadian Foundations

Examining the purposes, approaches, and roles foundations employ to fulfill their mandates.
  • 2025: Compensation Survey and Report

A comprehensive review of salary and benefits within PFC member organizations (and other grantmakers).
  • 2026: Working in Foundations

Insights into the people at the core of foundation operations, including staff and boards.
  • 2027: Investment Survey and Report

Detailed analysis of investment strategies, portfolio management, performance, and insights from PFC member organizations.
  • 2028: Landscape of Canadian Foundations

Revisiting the evolving purposes, approaches, and roles of Canadian foundations.

Our Compensation and Investment surveys remain accessible to PFC members as stand-alone resources, their data enriches our larger Landscape and Working in Foundations publications.

We produce and support research on philanthropy that is responsive to the evolving needs of the sector through strategic partnerships.

Our partnership with PhiLab and the Master of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership (MPNL) program at Carleton University exemplifies this approach. By leveraging PFC’s deep expertise in supporting philanthropic foundations, PhiLab’s extensive nationwide network that promotes and enhances the visibility of philanthropic research, and MPNL’s dedicated role in cultivating knowledgeable nonprofit professionals and researchers, we foster robust collaboration and meaningful engagement across the philanthropic sector.
