Toronto Regional Member Gathering: Funders & Journalism

We are delighted to invite you to a special hybrid member gathering (in-person in Toronto and online), which will be an opportunity to reconnect with regionally-based peers and dive into a topic of sector interest: funders and journalism.

When: Monday, November 6, 2023, 4 PM – 6:30 PM ET in-person (Online from 4:30-5:30pm) 

Where: Foundation House, 2 St. Clair Avenue East, Suite 300, Toronto, ON M4T 2T5, and online (Zoom) 

What: A panel discussion (in person and online)

Who: Leaders and supporters of funding journalism in Canada:  

Registered journalism organizations as a newer qualified donee category, and funding journalism more broadly, are subjects of interest to our network, but are not well understood in our sector. With a panel discussion and an open Q&A dialogue on the topic, this event will help build greater awareness of this emergent practice in philanthropy, how it’s done, and its alignment with foundations’ missions and impact. The panel will feature a leader from a journalism organization with experience working with philanthropy, a long-time funder in this space, and a funder new to supporting this type of work. 

The event will be followed by a reception in-person.

This event is open to Board and staff of PFC members, as well as foundations strongly considering membership.

Aviv Milgram

Director, Member Engagement & Communications

Aviv joined our team in January 2023 to lead PFC’s integrated member engagement and communications strategies and activities, in support of its advocacy, collaboration, and learning goals.

Coming from a background in both the philanthropic and non-profit sectors, Aviv’s experiences range from grants management and operations to directing strategic initiatives and stakeholder engagement. Her involvement has spanned from national philanthropy addressing community resilience, Indigenous reconciliation, and climate change, to local Montreal-based arts, culture, and heritage work in the museum sphere.

Aviv holds a BA from McGill University and an MA in Religion in Global Politics from SOAS, University of London.

Sara Krynitzki

Director, Public Affairs & Research

Sara has spent over 20 years leading non-profit initiatives across Canada. She began her career in fundraising, has worked on Parliament Hill, and for over eight years managed community initiatives and granting for one of Canada’s largest community foundations, allocating millions of dollars annually, and connecting philanthropy to the greatest needs to tackle inequity.

As Director of Public Affairs and Research, Sara guides PFC’s thought-leadership, advocacy agenda, research, and public relations activities to foster good public policies for the sector and to advance impactful, forward-thinking philanthropy.

She has a BA in Political Studies from Trent University and a Master’s in Public Policy and Public Administration from Concordia University. Having lived in several communities across Canada and internationally, Sara is now based in Toronto with her husband and three children.
