When: Monday, November 6, 2023, 4 PM – 6:30 PM ET in-person (Online from 4:30-5:30pm) Where: Foundation House, 2 St. Clair Avenue East, Suite 300, Toronto, ON M4T 2T5, and online (Zoom) What: A panel discussion (in person and online) Who: Leaders and supporters of funding journalism in Canada: April Lingren, Local News Research Project at Toronto Metropolitan University, and Researcher at PhiLab (Moderator) Ana Sofia Hibon, Inspirit Foundation Tai Huynh, The Local Marina Nuri, Mariam Assefa Fund Please note that our event will be using Chatham House rules, which means that you can reference what was shared but not who said it, or any identifying markers (like organization, etc) Registered journalism organizations as a newer qualified donee category, and funding journalism more broadly, are subjects of interest to our network, but are not well understood in our sector. With a panel discussion and an open Q&A dialogue on the topic, this event will help build greater awareness of this emergent practice in philanthropy, how it’s done, and its alignment with foundations’ missions and impact. The panel will feature a leader from a journalism organization with experience working with philanthropy, a long-time funder in this space, and a funder new to supporting this type of work. Launching a new tool to support foundations interested in funding journalism In partnership with Inspirit Foundation and the Local News Research Project at Toronto Metropolitan University, we will also be launching a new resource at this event aimed at supporting foundations interested in funding journalism – stay tuned for more details! The event will be followed by a reception in-person. This event is open to Board and staff of PFC members, as well as foundations strongly considering membership.
