Climate Change Advisor – Peter Gilgan Foundation

Who We Are

The Peter Gilgan Foundation is a private family foundation based in Toronto. We aim to support CRA registered charitable organizations and qualified donees as they build a more healthy, prosperous, and sustainable future. This is an exciting time of growth for the Foundation. We recently completed a strategic review and have refocused our three broad funding priorities: Children, Youth & Families; Climate Change; and International Development.

What We Offer

Reporting to the Program Director, the Climate Change Advisor will lead on areas of research, program development and implementation, impact measurement, and GHG quantification. This position will play an essential role in the Foundation’s work to combat climate change.

We are looking for a climate change expert to help us grow our Climate Change granting and impact investing program across our refreshed priorities:

  1. Nature-based Solutions – protection and restoration of priority ecosystems and Indigenous-protected lands
  2. Green Building and Living – green building skills and technologies, home energy efficiency, and affordable net zero housing
  3. Community Resilience – clean affordable energy for vulnerable communities and Indigenous-led solutions
  4. Low-emission and Renewable Technologies – cleantech ventures, net-zero technologies, and energy conservation

Responsibilities

Program Development:

  • Collaborate to build and deliver an ambitious and impactful Climate Change grant portfolio
  • Undertake research and identify areas of greatest potential impact within our priorities, and lead the design and implementation of initiatives and calls for proposals to address these areas
  • Assess opportunities and advise the Investment Committee on impact investments that address climate change
  • Advise and lead on applying a ‘climate lens’ across all granting programs and Foundation activities

Grant Management:

  • Review applications for funding and undertake due diligence on potential for climate impact
  • Sit on and support the Climate Change review committee
  • Steward relationships with applicants and partners
  • Develop and implement an approach to long-term impact measurement for the Climate Change portfolio including GHG quantification

Communications:

  • Represent the Foundation at events and forums such as the Canadian Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change
  • Create opportunities for knowledge sharing and awareness raising, such as climate change case studies, data visualizations, and convening
  • Liaise with partner operating business Mattamy Asset Management / Mattamy Homes on areas of potential congruence

Education

Undergraduate degree in sustainability or climate change related field, or equivalent experience

Experience

  • Commitment to combating climate change
  • Deep understanding of the scientific, technical, and social aspects of climate change and the various net-zero transition pathways, particularly in a Canadian context
  • Ability to reasonably estimate and quantify GHG emissions and reductions associated with the Foundation’s
    climate change priorities
  • Expertise in at least one of our four Climate Change priorities and awareness of all
  • Experience in program development and partnership management
  • Experience in quantitative problem solving and data collection and analysis
  • Experience in impact measurement
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
