• Revised in a new edition, this guide by lawyers Laird Hunter, Susan Manwaring and Margaret Mason describes the legal considerations and regulations that foundations should take into account as they move forward in mission investing. The 2012 edition of this guide has been revised for Quebec by François Morin of Borden Ladner Gervais to add references to the Quebec Civil Code provisions regarding investments by charities.

Research sponsored by Community Foundations of Canada and Philanthropic Foundations Canada into the status of community/mission investing on the part of Canadian foundations. This paper addresses the “community/mission investment” (C/MI) component of responsible investing – a process whereby foundations directly invest some of their assets in community, or social/environmental enterprises consistent with their mission.
• Mobilizing Private Capital for Public Good, 2010, The Canadian Task Force on Social Finance. Sets out seven key actions that Canada needs to undertake, in parallel, to mobilize new sources of capital, create an enabling tax and regulatory environment, and build a pipeline of investment-ready social enterprises. Explains the roles of financial institutions, investors, philanthropists and governments in this process.

This 72-page handbook is a primer intended to provide information for foundations and for non-profit organizations alike on using invested assets to achieve a mission or philanthropic goal.

A follow up to the early 2008 publication, Philanthropy’s New Passing Gear: Mission-Related Investing. This second guide aims to “increase the rigor with which investors interested in social and environmental impacts frame their investment decisions and demonstrate the integration of impact investing across asset classes.”
