RESOURCE:  Participatory Grantmaking: Has Its Time Come?

This new report from the Ford Foundation in the U.S. documents how foundations around the world are experimenting with new approaches to philanthropy that engage people from outside their institutions in everything from setting priorities and developing strategies to sitting on foundations’ boards or advisory committees.

What exactly are these “participatory foundations” doing, and why is it important? The paper not only tries to answer those questions but also synthesizes several existing participatory frameworks from the community organizing, deliberative governance, and community development domains; identifies common components and applies these to philanthropy; and offers a “starter” framework for the field that, hopefully, can be used as a springboard for ongoing discussion and development.
